![]() ![]() (Note, if you try to automatically reinstate the pgm, microsoft will say the attempt failed. If you wish to re-instate the program, repeat all of the above and choose “use this program” in the drop-down menu in the dialogue box. On next reboot, a small window appears on bottom of screen stating that K9 is “corrupted.” To get rid of this screen, click on it and a K9 website appears. Under Non Plug and play drivers disable the following: Right–click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager. This will work to deactivate the program (will not uninstall, but renders it harmless): Manually searched through the registry deleting all registry keys referencing K9 Webfilter or BlueCoat.Don’t forget to backup the registry when it asks if you are also trying this. Ran CCleaner on the system removing all of the files found and thorughly cleaned the registry.I used the uninstall tool to forcefully remove the K9 web filter and also scan for and remove all registry entries relating to the web filter. I tried forcefully uninstalling the application with a tool called Portable Uninstall Tool which can be found on another blog called FC Portables. The K9 web filter was installed on an old system and the user had forgotten the password which led them to not being able to use it for browsing the Internet. The request to remove it genuinely was from a user. I tried all of the ideas I could think of and suggestions scattered about the Internet about this piece of software. It takes diligence on the parents' part.I was preparing to write up the solution in this article but was unable to forcefully uninstall it! This is probably why the program is free. of surfing, I reported two sites I thought were definitely in the wrong categories. I can feel my self surfing and wondering if I should report a certain site, or tell them that the site is just mislabeled. K9 takes the common route of many internet protection programs by creating an extensive blacklist, but adds an extensive vigilant response from customers or parents with an extensive category system of various levels. Yet, I'm a firm believer that no program is perfect, and is a poor substitute for actual parenting. This is by far the best one I have used, and given that it is FREE makes this one head and shoulders above the rest.Īs a concerned parent of two, coupled with the escalation of dangerous web-surfing, I'm always keeping an eye out for practical ways of protecting my kids without stifling their growth. I've tried several content filters in the past and have also used OpenDNS to enhance my content filtering. You can also add sites to your own personal blocklist if desired. I have submitted quite a few sites and the turnaround from submission to judgement and re-categorisation has only been a few hours. The software offers the ability to submit sites for review that you consider are incorrectly labelled or not labelled at all. While the software does refer to an extensive blocklist, the software makes an intelligent guess as to the nature of those sites not already categorised. This free software enables the administrator on the machine to select which categories should be blocked and also allows time limits for Internet usage to be enforced. The features of this software far surpass many competitors. I've been using this for a while now and have experienced no problems with crashes or odd behaviour. ![]() Here's hoping that K9 finally incorporates this long-promised feature sometime soon.īut even still, thanks K9 for making it possible to actually feel comfortable leaving my kid alone with the computer. Many parents want their kid's accounts filtered, but don't want their own filtered. The one big complaint about K9 (from their forum and from me) is that it isn't possible to install it separately for different users/accounts. ![]() Trouble is of course, when your kid goes over to some friend's house whose parents don't have this or something else, all your efforts are rendered futile. It just seems to reliably work to block the bad stuff, and there's getting to be more and more of it all the time. No problems that I've encountered like crashing, slowed down surfing, etc. Lots of flexibility and customization features. It just works more by categories, I guess. It doesn't require constant downloads of updates like virus software, for instance. This really does seem to be a very good way to keeps the kids away from the bad stuff. ![]()
